The Student of the Month for April is Leamington District Secondary School Grade 12 student Joel Stockwell - a remarkable role model for the theme of 鈥渋nitiative鈥.
Joel excels due to his ability to act. He is resourceful and conscientious in his academics, extracurriculars, and in the community.
Computer programming has been his passion from a young age. He once built a remote control wheelchair. In high school, he started a coding club for ESL students who did not have access to computers at home.
Joel is recognized by Leamington鈥檚 teachers as a reliable, conscientious student who takes initiative in all areas of his life. He co-organized the LDSS peer tutoring service, qualified for SWOSSA in men鈥檚 doubles as a member of the Lions鈥 badminton team and was a multiple medalist at WECCSSAA with Lions swim team. Joel is also a music student and took on the additional responsibility of a Repertoire class playing clarinet.
In the community, Joel is a busy volunteer with the town鈥檚 Junior Badminton Club, the Southwestern Ontario Gleaners, the Leamington Mennonite Home, Skate Wheatley and his public school. He is a lifeguard and instructor, teaching swimming lessons to students of all ages.
Last year, Joel took the initiative to find himself a paid summer co-op at Brave Control Solutions, an engineering consulting company where he could get hands-on mechatronics experience. Joel researched the company, successfully interviewed for the position and made such an impression on them that he was offered a chance to return this summer.
With an academic average of 99%, Joel has accepted an offer from the University of Waterloo Mechatronics Engineering Co-Op Program.
Congratulations Joel for being selected by Student Senate for the April Student of the Month for the theme of 鈥渋nitiative鈥!
