June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada and June 21st is Indigenous Peoples Day.
These are both significant annual occasions which we, as a school board - and all Canadians - should not only acknowledge but actively celebrate.
We are compelled by the , as well as a genuine, moral obligation, to teach more, learn more and know more about First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples and develop a greater understanding of their heritage and culture.
It is only through honest and earnest examination of history that we will ever be able to build the awareness needed to reconcile centuries of ignorance and neglect and create inclusive and supportive learning and working environments.
I am proud of the actions we have taken for our staff, students and their families but there is much more we can do to be leaders in society for true and lasting reconciliation.
